Change Leadership Summit - Virtual Series
Thu 19th Aug 2021, 9:00 am - Thu 30th Sep 2021, 10:00 am AEST

Details

McKinsey research and client experience suggest that half of all efforts to transform organizational performance fail either because senior managers don’t act as role models for change or because people in the organization defend the status quo. In other words, despite the stated change goals, people on the ground tend to behave as they did before. Equally, the same McKinsey research indicates that if companies can identify and address pervasive mind-sets at the outset, they are four times more likely to succeed in organizational-change efforts than are companies that overlook this stage”

Join us for a series of inspiring leadership stories and strategies from some of the most respected and largest organisations in the country.

These highly interactive 1 hour panel discussions will focus on sharing the change leadership journey including the ‘why’, what worked, what did not and lessons learnt.

The objective of these webinars is to help business leaders learn from the wisdom and experiences of the speakers to help them lead change and transformation within their organisations.

LOVE YOUR PEOPLE part of the Clarity Works and Story at Work Series
Wed 4th Aug 2021, 10:30 am - Thu 25th Nov 2021, 12:00 pm AEST

Details

Love Your People takes your understanding of your people beyond simply knowing who they are. Through a deep examination of trust and truth, you build a deeper affinity and empathy for them. This masterclass presents the many ways in which you can examine the challenges, issues, or pain they experience, and the symptoms of those needs. In each lies the stories you can tell that will specifically and—with love—address them.

Clarity Works & Story at Work Masterclass

Are you a thought leader, a social enterprise, impact business, or a not-for-profit founder in a start-up or emerging or organisation? Welcome to the ‘Clarity Works & Story at Work’ Masterclass masterclass modules — eight masterclasses developed by Sandy McDonald; an author, TEDx Speaker, trainer, and storytelling communication coach.

The Clarity Works masterclasses are based on years of coaching experience helping business founders to dive deep and explore their unique value, market and proposition. Clarity and its ally, curiosity creates assurance in the fundamentals for compelling communication – purpose, principles, people, value, insights, and proposition.

The Story at Work masterclasses define the structure and content for purpose-driven storytelling and give you the tools to unearth, craft and tell compelling stories that are relevant to your audience.

On select dates, one-day masterclasses will be held once a month from August 4th to November 25th. You can choose to enroll into one masterclass out of the eight, make multiple bookings for a reduced overall cost, or book all eight classes which significantly reduces the price.

FOCUS YOUR STORY LENS part of the Clarity Works and Story at Work Series
Wed 4th Aug 2021, 10:30 am - Wed 24th Nov 2021, 12:00 pm AEST

Details

Focus Your Story Lens explores the most captivating lens for irresistible storytelling— your purpose and principles. Without a simple articulated purpose through which you can filter every message and a set of identified principles—the immutable laws by which you operate—stories are random rather than purpose-led, contextualised, and relevant for your audience.

Evidence-based decision making, with Edge Environment
Fri 30th July 2021, 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm AEST

Details

Metrics, or systems of quantitative measurement, are a fundamental component of both identifying issues with the linear economy and tracking progress towards circularity. The first in a three-part series on metrics, this event will introduce you to the role of data in a circular economy.

The free 45-minute session will be presented by Dr Matthew Parnell, Head of Circular Economy and Life Cycle Thinking at specialist sustainability advisory company Edge Environment. Drawing on his experiences leading a team of circular economy consultants at Edge, Matthew will walk you through the process of gathering, manipulating and understanding data. He will also look at the limitations of data and provide advice for scenarios where data cannot yet be generated.

“In your circularity transition good, robust data is vital. However, it is even more important to know what you want to measure and why you want to measure it. What will you do with the data once you have it? If data doesn’t lead to action for change and transformation you are wasting your time,” he says.

The session is designed for government agencies and businesses of all sizes and stages of their circular economy journey, whether you’re a start-up without any data or a large corporation looking to optimise your sustainability strategy.

Re-imagining 'Quality of Life' and 'Social Wellbeing' in Australia
Wed, 14th July 2021, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM CST

Details

People have been thinking about, describing, and striving for ‘the good life’ or ‘quality of life’ for millennia. Since the 1950s, the concept of gross domestic product (GDP) has dominated discussions about economic progress and economic growth by nation states, and narrow concepts around income and financial value have come to dominate individual notions of worth and wealth. However the past few decades have seen a rising movement of people trying to describe and define ‘wellbeing’ and ‘quality of life’ in alternative ways – challenging the dominant capitalist and financial growth mode of thinking and building policy.

This workshop series seeks to share information about different perspectives and stimulate discussion on these topics. The workshops are part of a larger project that invites individuals and organisations within the NENA network to share their ideas about how to define ‘quality of life’ and wellbeing in 21st Century Australia.

From June to October 2021, UoN and NENA will be hosting monthly online workshops that invite guest speakers and participants to explore, challenge and re-define the concepts of ‘quality of life’ and ‘social wellbeing’ in Australia.

You are invited to join one or more of our workshops, to listen to thought-provoking guest speakers, join the discussions and share your views. This webinar series is part of the UoN research project: “Reimagining Quality of Life Post-COVID”, funded by the UON College of Human and Social Futures and hosted by the Alternative Futures Research Hub (AFRHub)

Sustainable Leadership Series: Employee Engagement & CSR
Thu 24th June 2021, 9:00 am - 10:00 am AEST

Details

Employee Engagement and Corporate Social Responsibility: Why, how, and what else?

in Partnership with Prof Debbie Haski-Leventhal, Macquarie Business School

Employee engagement is sometimes referred to as the holy grail for today’s business leader, and for good reason. According to Gallup, a highly engaged workforce means the difference between a company that outperforms its competitors and one that fails to grow.

So what are high performing organizations doing to address the issue?

According to EY and Harvard Business Review research, 89% of executives surveyed said a strong sense of collective purpose drives employee satisfaction; 84 per cent said it can affect an organization’s ability to transform, and 80 per cent said it helps increase customer loyalty.

For the next three parts of our Sustainable Leadership series, Communiteer, in partnership with Macquarie Business School will host a series of webinars, discussing the ground-breaking ways of engaging employees with corporate social responsibility.

Join us for this highly interactive discussion with a panel of experts, to get deeper insights into how leaders are collaborating across the industry to deliver an engaging employee experience.

Employee engagement & CSR: Why, how, and what else?

This webinar, the first part of our partnership with Macquarie Business School, will examine the reasons for the ongoing decline in employee engagement and how CSR can be the best way to address this global issue.

In this session, we will discuss why CSR and purpose can unleash a new wave of engagement, be inspired by companies that do it well and dive deep into how to engage employees through and in CSR. The webinar will also touch on issues relating to meaningfulness at work and the role of CSR can play in delivering a sense of affiliation.

Kaj Lofgren on Doughnut Economics in Melbourne
Tue 22nd June 2021, 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm AEST

Details

The pioneering book Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st Century Economist was released by economist and author Kate Raworth in 2017. This ground-breaking work presented seven ways to rethink economics. The first way is to create a new goal for progress and prosperity in the 21st century, beyond the simple, outdated and problematic goal of growth at all costs. More than a vision, the Doughnut offers us a compass to navigate the complex social and ecological challenges that face humanity in the 21st century.

Visualised as two concentric circles forming a doughnut ring, with our social foundation as the inner ring and the ecological boundaries as the outer ring, this vision presents a world in which people and planet can thrive in balance.

Our global challenge is to simultaneously meet the human needs and wellbeing of all, while also regenerating our planet and bringing our ecological impact back from our current overshoot. This challenge must be met by all actors and levels of government, including at a city scale. Cities around the world (including Amsterdam, Philadelphia and Portland) have risen to this challenge and have begun localising the Doughnut model to a city scale. What is the opportunity of the doughnut model in Melbourne?

Regen Melbourne is an emerging network of individuals and organisations exploring a regenerative future for Melbourne. Formed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Regen Melbourne is now made up of more than 500 individuals and more than 40 organisations from across sectors and disciplines.

Join us to connect with this pioneering work with one of the key convenors of the project, Kaj Lofgren, Head of Strategy at Small Giants Academy, and become part of the Regeneration of Melbourne.

THE EVOLUTION OF BUSINESS. Why Purposeful business is essential to society's future
Tue 4th May 2021, 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm AEST

Details

Charles Darwin brought us the term “survival of the fittest” and suggested that organisms best adjusted to their environment are the most successful in surviving and reproducing.

So what happens when we apply this thinking to business?

If business is an organism, then how it adjusts to its environment has to be paramount in determining how successful it will be in surviving and growing. The last few decades of Shareholder Capitalism-driven business has led to short-term expectations of profit. The pursuit of profit has driven environmental vandalism and social compromise.

Not every business has trodden this path, but enough have, to create a society with increasing inequality, poverty, mental and health issues and climate change. Business cannot exist without society. That is a fundamental, unavoidable truth.

Yet the continuation of business-as-usual leads society to a bleak future. So how can business adjust to this environment to secure its future? Enter Social Purpose.

Join Carolyn at 12:30 AEST May 4th, when she’ll be hosting a free webinar on “The Evolution of Business”. This is such a topical subject today and is equally relevant to SME businesses and large corporate businesses and brands.

Innovations in Workplace Giving
Wed 28th April 2021, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm AEST

Details

Contrary to what many think, philanthropy is not just something that those with wealth do. There are so many ways that people can make an impact through philanthropy – big and small – and in fact, the vast bulk of the more than $10 billion donated to Australian charities each year comes from smaller donations, with research showing that planned givers who make a regular donation tend to give more.

Workplace giving is a burgeoning area of planned giving – providing a simple and efficient way for employees to regularly donate to charities through their employer’s payroll system.

In this impact2021 webinar we’ll explore some of the innovative approaches we’re seeing in workplace giving across Australia, and we’ll discuss how we can get more people involved.

The webinar panel will also take a look at the Giving Circles at Work pilot undertaken in 2019 and 2020, which involved a collective approach to workplace giving and had the added benefit of fostering collaboration and building relationships between employees.

The panel will also examine some exciting models being used by larger and smaller businesses to encourage workplace giving, and we’ll hear a charity’s perspective about the benefits of these types of donations.

World Fair Trade Day #buildbackfairer Cambodia
Thu 6th May 2021, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEST

Details

In celebration of World Fair Trade Day on May 8, Moral Fairground presents World Fair Trade Day #BuildBackFairer – Fair Trade Around The World, Columbia on Thursday May 6. This year, the World Fair Trade Organisation is promoting the #BuildBackFairer movement to encourage governments, communities and the world to rebuild their economies ethically and sustainably. “The Fair Trade movement has a solution. To rising inequality, to entrenched poverty, to gender discrimination, to environmental destruction. Recovering from the pandemic gives the world a chance not just to build back better, but build back fairer.” – The World Fair Trade Organisation on #BuildBackFairer.

In support of #BuildBackFairer, we present an opportunity to take a look at the Fair Trade Movement around the world, highlighting Cambodia with; Marie Delassus – Export Director at La Plantation, a family owned project, created in 2013, committed to growing and delivering the best sustainable spices. In their flagship farm in the Kampot area in southern Cambodia, they follow century-old traditions to preserve the original taste of each spice, and Ruth Elliot – Founder of Daughters of Cambodia, a British psychologist working with young victims of sex trafficking in Cambodia, started Daughters of Cambodia in 2007, an organisation empowers those trapped in the sex industry to walk free and start a new life, with the means to recover, experience dignity, and prosper. This is achieved by providing jobs coupled with recovery programs.Fair Trade jobs with skill acquisition are the first step and for this Daughters operates production enterprises making sewn products, wooden ornaments, and jewellery along with screen printing.

A rare opportunity to celebrate World Fair Trade Day with other like-minded and ethical organisations from around the world, and do your part to support an ever-grown and more relevant than ever movement. 2021 Shared Value Summit Asia Pacific
Thu 17th June 2021, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm AEST

Details

The 2021 Shared Value Summit Asia Pacific is the region’s pre-eminent purpose-led business event, and will explore the theme: The Future We Choose.

Supported by major sponsor, AIA Australia, this year’s Summit is arguably our most important yet; as the link between social and economic prosperity deepens, and the need for shared value solutions becomes imperative.

A hybrid event – broadcast online and delivered in-studio at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) – the Summit will focus on how to harness this historical moment in time, as we mark the 10th anniversary of the global shared value movement.

The Future We Choose

2020 has shown us that people and business are capable of great change. We’ve realised we’re not locked into age-old systems, norms and mindsets. And, as a result, we have more freedom and agency to determine the future than ever before. But what we do with this is up to us.

We can shift towards acknowledging the interdependency between social and economic prosperity – and prioritise holistic and inclusive outcomes. We can pool the resources and expertise of business, government, investors and community organisations to take sustainable action. And we can empower private sector leadership to innovate commercial solutions to the world’s biggest challenges, by creating shared value.

This future is ours to create, we just need to choose it.

Summit program & delivery

The Summit will be delivered both in-person and online (a hybrid). This year, we’re excited to offer access to an event app for all participants, to facilitate online networking and content-sharing. We look forward to sharing more on this soon.

The program will be delivered as a plenary, with optional theme-based tracks in the afternoon. These will cover topical issues such as disaster resilience and mental health (soon to be advised). Key speakers and full program to be announced in the coming weeks.

The Ethics of Disagreement
Thu 13th May 2021, 6:30 – 7:30 pm AEST

Details

Step into any relationship therapist’s office and they’ll tell you that what predicts a breakup isn’t whether a couple fight – it’s how they fight. Couples that stay together fight fair.

If we put modern society into the therapist’s office, they’d probably be recommending us a good divorce lawyer. It feels like we’ve lost a sense of principled disagreement – the idea that it’s OK if reasonable people think differently about something that matters.

In part, this is because we’ve changed the boundaries on what is OK to disagree about. Today, disagreement and debate about sensitive issues is seen by some as harmful or violent.

We can all be guilty of treating disagreement as something that must have a winner and a loser. Whilst in other times disagreement has been used as a tool for everyone to learn; today, we disagree without any readiness to be persuaded.

When should we respectfully disagree? Should we always be open to having our mind changed? Can we remain friends with someone who we disagree with about things that really matter?

Join us as we explore the art of disagreement and learn to fight fair.

This event is part of ‘The Ethics of’ trilogy which includes ‘The Ethics of Trust’ and ‘The Ethics of Disagreement’. ‘The Ethics Of…’ is an intimate event series that offers an opportunity to freely examine the experiences, hopes and challenges that make us truly human. In this trilogy, the meaning, mess and morality of trust, forgiveness and disagreement are put under the microscope through playful thought experiments. Join The Ethics Centre for a set of important conversations about the different ways we connect to each other.

The Ethics of Trust
Thu 22nd April 2021, 6:30 – 7:30 pm AEST

Details

In many ways, saying we trust someone is shorthand for saying that we think they’re a good person. And yet, we so often misplace our trust – in people, institutions and belief systems.

If you’ve been burnt too many times, you might have considered giving up on trust altogether. But the cynical path of not trusting anyone is a lonely one – not to mention that it’s basically impossible. Trust is the oxygen of social connection.

How does trust work? Why is it so hard to work out who is deserving of trust? And what should we think about the fact that politicians and businesses are spending a fortune on trust experts who are helping them to ‘build trust’?

Join us for an interactive thought experiment where we look at the mechanics of trust – how it makes the world and relationships go round.

The purpose of this event is to get you talking, to help you get to know the other awesome people in the community, and go beyond connection to collaboration.

Our events are a-buzz with just the right kind of vibe. We are a high-frequency community of amazing, conscious people who are working to make the world the better place we want it to be. Sparks happen when we gather, so we got to thinking – this time, what might happen if we’re even more intentional about the impact we have the potential to make, as a group, for our part of the world? If you are picking up what we are putting down, then you gotta come!

GoodGatherings are for all Good Humans, independent of what you do for work. We are about what you intend!

It is a GoodGathering. Not a networking event. We pose a different question. Not “What do you do?” rather “What are you passionate about?” Or “What lights you up?” It’s the way we see what is in each other’s heart, our purpose.

Details

Impatient to change the world? Eager to connect ‘why’ to ‘how’ in your day-to-day work? Welcome to the Shared Value Masterclass Series.

To meet a growing appetite and need for socio-economic solutions, SVP has launched the Shared Value Masterclasses – a series of virtual workshops designed to cover both shared value theory and practice.

Defined as a strategy to solve social issues profitably, shared value has never been more important than it is today. And as we move increasingly from the why to the how, the Masterclass Series will get practical – connecting concepts to real-world examples, and focussing on how to put key shared value principles into action.

The series – running from 10 March to 13 July – begins with a foundational workshop, before sharpening your skills in share value innovation, partnerships and measurement.

The Masterclass Series is designed to cater to the varied priorities and levels of shared value knowledge across all organisations.

The Ethics of Forgiveness
Wed 31st March 2021, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm AEDT

Details

There’s an old saying ‘resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die’. It appears to be sage advice – offer forgiveness and move on from past wrongs – but is it true?

If you’ve ever been denied forgiveness, or on the receiving end of an ‘unforgivable’ act, you’ll know the angst and hardship it can cause. There are times when a wrongdoer can begin to feel like a victim in their own right.

If they’ve apologised and tried to make good for what they’ve done are they entitled to forgiveness? Does forgiveness really set you free?

Join us for an interactive thought experiment where we examine forgiveness, from personal betrayals to historical injustices on a national scale, and ask, ‘Are some things unforgivable?’

Conversation: Our 21st Century Imperative with Jay Coen Gilbert
Tue 1st December 2020, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm AEDT

Details

What is the energy required for 2020 to become the moment of pivot? What does it take to build a global campaign to shift hearts and minds towards systems change?

Fifty years ago, The New York Times published an essay by Milton Friedman which declared that a company’s only interest should be maximising the profits of its shareholders. This set the trajectory for our current economic system. Measurement of wellbeing and interdependence took a back seat to the endless accumulation of profit and individualism we now see where 26 people have the same amount of wealth as the rest of humanity, and the climate emergency is upon us. It’s time to reset.

Imperative 21 is a global campaign calling for this very reset. The movement represents more than 70,000 businesses, 20 million employees and $15 trillion in assets under management. The reset, amplified by the United Nations General Assembly, calls for accountability for our impact on all stakeholders, recognition of the interdependence of people, planet and our economy, and radical collaboration between the private sector, public leaders and citizens to build back better.

These global movements don’t happen without audacious vision and collective leadership. Jay Coen Gilbert is the co-chair of Imperative 21 and founder of B Lab. He is escalating the call for an economic reset and turning a lot of heads in the process.

Join us for this timely and potent conversation.

Conversation: Helena Norberg-Hodge on Local Futures
Tue 10th November 2020, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm AEDT

Details

“Local. A simple concept with the potential to change the world. The antidote to consumer capitalism. The key to solving our seemingly endless ecological crises. A guiding principle to take us back home: to community, to the natural world, and to prosperous, place-based economies.”

For more than four decades, Helena Norberg-Hodge has been raising awareness about the need to return to local – to move away from dependence on global monopolies, towards decentralised, regional economies.

Since the advent of colonialism and globalisation, the fabric of local interdependence has been steadily unravelling, writes Helena. We have been made dependent on distant bureaucracies and vast technological systems for everything from our food to our jobs, from the information we receive to our means of social interaction. To our own detriment, we have been distanced from the complex, interdependent web of life that is not only the real, localised economy, but a perpetual source of wonder and fulfilment.

In this conversation, Helena will remind us that it’s not too late to find our way back home. Speaking to the growing movement happening worldwide in which local self-reliance is being reclaimed, she will show us how we can withdraw our dependence on a resource-intensive global economy and create nourishing, life-affirming alternatives from the ground up. Often the work of stepping off the treadmill can be overwhelming, where do you start?

Join us as Helena shares examples from her own journey, as well as those of the many incredible people she’s come to meet, in which local alternatives to education, food, media, politics and economics have been implemented around the world.

Masterclass: In Business to Save Our Home Planet with Dane O’Shanassy
Tue 27th October 2020, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm AEDT

Details

Patagonia is the exemplar of business as a force for good, a global icon and a symbol of a hopeful future.

From humble beginnings blacksmithing pitons for rock climbers in California to a global outdoor clothing operation with offices in the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Chile and Argentina — and over 70 stores worldwide, Patagonia aims to use all the resources it has: its business, its investments, its voice and its imagination to protect our planet.

With decades of steadfast loyalty to environmental ethics, the company continues to grow its reputation and impact. Patagonia has become the subject of a Harvard Business School case study and won the United Nations Champions of the Earth award in 2019. What does success mean for a business balancing global retail, activism and storytelling? How do you lead a business with an outspoken commitment not to compromise, no matter what the financial success on the other side of that compromise might be?

Dane O’Shanassy is the Country Director of Patagonia Australia. His leadership embodies the very values that are so dear to Patagonia. Rather than striving to be a visionary of change and innovation, O’Shanassy sees his role as a custodian of something much greater, something in service to our planet, something intergenerational, something simultaneously humble and profound.

NENA 2019 Annual Conference, Perth – ‘Beyond Paradigms’
4-7 OCTOBER

Details

New Economy Network Australia (NENA) and the enkel collective invite peers in innovation and positive changemaking from across the New Economy spectrum for the 4th annual NENA conference. Titled “Beyond Paradigms,” it proposes that meeting the unique and urgent challenges facing humanity in the 21st century calls for new approaches, an openness to exploring worldviews other than our own, clarity in our communications, collaboration, and practical ways to navigate the ever-increasing complexity of our times.

The event is intended to serve those who have the courage of their convictions, but also the flexibility to entertain—and even embrace—divergent worldviews. Building this capacity is essential as we encounter and move through the extraordinary changes we face now, as a society and as a species.

The inspiration for the conference’s overarching theme, Beyond Paradigms, comes from Donella Meadows’ work, in which she describes the most effective points of leverage to intervene in a system as
a) the mindset from which a given paradigm arises, and
b) transcending paradigms entirely.

As human beings, deeply influenced by the contexts and cultures from which we come, we view our worlds through filters and lenses. The question then becomes, as we encounter each other, are we building bridges or walls between our views? Can we remove our own lenses, and try on someone else’s, even for a moment?

The future of humanity, and of our precious planet, may well depend on it.

To change work cultures, we need to develop new leadership skills — and learn how to develop those capacities in everyone we work with. We need to un-learn those practices that no longer serve, and step up into a whole new level of potential. Self-management is a never-ending process of learning — about the broader functions of an organization, our own capacity and confidence to step into roles and collaboration and trust.

This 5-week immersive online course is based on learning by doing in a cohort of peers. With an intentional mix of theory, inspiration, project work, publishing and self-organizing, you will Work Out Loud and learn from your coaches and your peers.

How can your business be a force for good? How can business leaders help build back better? Would you like some help with challenges on your conscious business journey? Or just curious what it means to be a conscious capitalist?

Conscious Business Leaders are needed now, more than ever, as we navigate challenging times and shape a post-COVID recovery.

Join us to explore or deepen the practice of Conscious Capitalism principles in your work. Whether you are a business owner, manager or consultant, and wherever you are on the conscious business journey, now is the opportunity to impact the future of society through business.

“As a conscious business leader, there is often no roadmap. To learn from a community of professional peers is, in a word: game-changing.”

The pandemic additionally presents new and complex challenges that are better navigated together, drawing on collective insights from a purpose-driven community.

Impact Groups are designed for participants to learn with and from each other. In this session, we come together to ask questions, discuss challenges, share learnings and find peer support.

This hour-long session is open to both members and non-members. It is a practical way to learn “in the field”, a great way to get to know other members, and for non-members to get a taste of Conscious Capitalism in practice. So feel free to invite your team and networks.
